Once you have created a link to Drexel Libraries Course Reserves in your course Blackboard learn, you can then create a reading list. Please note: you MUST create the link to Drexel Libraries Course Reserves first, otherwise, you cannot complete next steps.
In this guide, we will cover how to create a list of materials in the Drexel Libraries Course Reserves system, and add an example item. Please note that before you can create a reading list, you must create a link between your Blackboard course shell and Drexel Libraries Course Reserves. That process is outlined in a previous guide.
If you have any questions along the way, please contact the reserves team at reserve@drexel.edu.
First, log into Blackboard Learn, and select the course you would like to create a list for. In the image below, you can see in the lefthand panel that a tool link for course reserves has already been created.
Click on the Course Reserves link
You will be prompted to select from a few options. The first is to create a reading list from scratch. The second is to copy an existing reading list. The third option (in smaller text at the bottom - you may have to scroll down to see) is to ask the library staff to create your reading list for you. If you select the third option, you would send the library your course syllabus, and library staff will take care of the rest.
For this example, we are going to create a reading list from scratch. Let’s click “create new list”.
On the following page, you will see that the reading list is automatically titled with your course title and section, along with the academic term and year. You are free to change this to a different title, or add additional information in the "List Description" area, but you're not required to.
When you are ready, click “next”.
On the following page, you will see that our system automatically organizes your list by (10) quarter term weeks.
If your course is a part of the semester system instead of the quarter system, or if you simply don’t want 10 sections, feel free to change the number of sections by typing in a new number at the top. (If you are unsure whether your course is a part of the quarter or semester system, please reach out to someone in the program or college in which you are teaching to ask.)
If you click the dropdown arrow next to "Term Weeks", you can select the option to organize your list by Required / Optional readings instead of by term week.
Click “create list” so that you can get to the next step of adding items.
You can now add items to your reading list. Please note: per the information stated in the purple banner at the top, the reading list will not be available or visible to students until you add your items, and then click “my list is ready”.
So, let’s add an item. For this example, we will add an article that is available in the library’s online catalog. Click on the “Add” button with the plus sign, located near the lefthand side of the screen.
A small menu of options will appear. Since we want to add an article from Drexel Libraries', we will click the first option – “Add items using Drexel Libraries' DragonSearch”.
For this example, we are going to be searching for an article titled “Maker Spaces in Libraries at US Public Colleges and Universities: a Census”. Once you’ve typed the full title into the search box, hit the search icon at the right end of the search bar.
Scroll through results until you find the item you wish to add. When you hover over the item, a green plus sign button will appear on the right side. Click it to add it to your course reserves.
Upon clicking the icon, you will be prompted to select which section, or week, you want to add the item to. Select the appropriate section from the dropdown list, and then click “Add”.
The item will now appear under the section you selected. You can continue adding items if you wish. Once you are finished adding items, click the button at the top that says “My list is ready”.
Your list is now published, and can be viewed by your students. You can check the status of your list at the top, next to where it says “course readings” to confirm that it has been published.
You are now all set with your course reserves! Students will be able to see any online articles and Ebooks that you selected. Any requests that require library processing will not be visible until they have been completed. Remember, if you need any further assistance, please contact the reserves team at reserve@drexel.edu.
