Faculty Works in Drexel Research Discovery

Research and creative works authored or created by Drexel University faculty and staff as part of their professional duties are eligible to be added to Drexel Research Discovery.

Drexel University Libraries staff works with university colleges, departments, research centers, and individual faculty to select, submit, and manage content. Faculty and researchers are invited to contribute their scholarship for long-term preservation, discoverability, and accessibility.  Archiving content in the database is free and allowed by many publishers.

The type of content housed in Drexel Research Discovery includes but is not limited to:

  • journal articles, accepted manuscripts, and pre-prints
  • abstracts and conference proceedings
  • conference presentations, papers, and posters
  • datasets, software, and code
  • books and book chapters
  • teaching and learning materials
  • creative works
  • working papers and reports
  • theses and dissertations
  • any other content appropriate for a faculty member's CV

Maintaining your profile and publications in Drexel Research Discovery allows you to benefit from the many services provided by the system, such as:

  • customized CV creation
  • automatic update of your ORCID profile
  • ongoing data improvement, which can enrich publication metadata and automatically add identifiers such as DOI, PMID, and WoS
  • and more

Drexel-published content archived in Drexel Research Discovery is:

  • discoverable by search engines such as Google and Google Scholar
  • indexed and searchable in DU Discovery, the University of Iowa Libraries' catalog
  • registered with a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) - for Drexel work which is not formally published, such as theses, dissertations, datasets, working papers, reports, pre-prints, accepted manuscripts, and more
  • openly accessible to researchers around the world who may have limited access to scholarly materials

Works can be added to Drexel Research Discovery in 3 ways:

  1. Smart Harvest - Smart Harvest is an algorithm-based process which automatically captures metadata of publications by Drexel University researchers that are indexed in the Ex Libris Central Discovery Index (CDI).  Works captured via Smart Harvest may be automatically approved or manually approved by library staff before they are added to Drexel Research Discovery, depending on the degree of confidence in the result.  Smart Harvest runs weekly on all tenure-track faculty, researchers with public profiles, and some additional research staff to keep Drexel Research Discovery and Researcher Profiles up to date. (NOTE: Due to copyright restrictions, full-text files are not added to Drexel Research Discovery via Smart Harvest -- only links to full-text.)
  2. Imports - Lists of publications, DOIs, PMIDs, and more can be converted into CSV, RIS, or BIBTEX format and imported into Drexel Research Discovery.  Files can also be added using an import process. Our team has tools which can easily convert citation lists into a compatible format for bulk load.  Contact libsystems@drexel.edu to get started.
  3. Add Content - Researchers can sign in to Drexel Research Discovery via Drexel Connect and use the +ADD CONTENT  button (top right) to manually submit their work, even if their profile does not appear publicly -- for example, many graduate students have profiles which are not displayed to the public (see the How to Add Content tab for detailed instructions).

If works do not have associated full-text files or links, DU Discovery View Online options are available to connect to library subscription sources, search library holdings, or request interlibrary loan.

DU faculty, researchers, and students can self-deposit their scholarly work in Drexel Research Discovery.  Anything appropriate for a CV is appropriate for inclusion in Drexel Research Discovery.  Deposits are reviewed by library staff.  Upon approval, the records will be discoverable in Drexel Research Discovery, DU Discovery, Google, and Google Scholar.  Please note:  You must have the legal right to post any uploaded files.

To deposit your work, go to Drexel Research Discovery, and sign in via Drexel Connect. This will take you to your Drexel Research Discovery profile, including your works which have already been added to the system.  Then click the +ADD CONTENT  button (top right).

If you are adding a work indexed in the Ex Libris Central Discovery Index (CDI), the submission form will be populated with relevant metadata automatically after you add an identifier (i.e., PMID or DOI) or a URL linking to the publication.  Complete the form as best you can, then click Submit.  Researchers can also add files and links for their work through the Add Content process. Files are not automatically converted to PDF.

The video below can guide you through the entire process, from start to finish.
