Adding References to your Mendeley Library

There are several ways to add references into Mendeley

This Mendeley Minute will show you how to:

  • Use the Import to Mendeley Importer button
  • Drag a PDF or list of references into your Mendeley library 
  • Import references from another citation manager like EndNote or Zotero

Web of Science

To save an individual or group of references from Web of Science to Mendeley Desktop:

  • Mark the record(s) using the checkboxes to the left of the article(s)  then click on the 'Add to Marked List' link at the top center of the page.
  • When you've finished marking the results you want to export, click on the 'Marked Records' button at the the top right of the page.
  • If there are additional fields of data you want, mark it now.
  • Proceed to step 3: Click 'Save to other file for...'; Save to other file formats; then from Other File Format select BibTex. Open the results in Mendeley Desktop.

You can also try importing the records to Mendeley Web using the Web Importer button

  1. Search Web of Science and click the Web Importer button on your browser.
  2. Select references for import from your Result list.  Note that the more you scroll down to see results, the more articles the WI will try to import.
  3. Click the Save button
  4. Click the Web Library button to view them in you Mendeley Web Library
  5. Depending on your settings, your records will sync the next time you open Mendeley Desktop.

Summon

Summon  is the discovery tool for the Drexel University Libraries and searches across our catalog (books, CDs, DVDs, government documents, journal titles, etc), our guides, and many (but not all) of our article databases.

To import records from Summon into Mendeley Desktop:

  1. Click on the folder beside each citation you want to save to add it to your temporary records folder.
  2. Click the main folder at the top of the page to open the temporary records folder.
  3. Click the Export As  button to drop down a list of options.
  4. Select ENDNOTE  (BibTex will not work)
  5. Depending on your browser system, you will be given a choice of which program to open the file. Open with Mendeley or if you don't have that option, save the file then import the file using the Files>Add Files option in Mendeley Desktop

You can also try importing records with the Web Importer

  1. Select references for import from your Summon result list or Temporary Folder.  Note that the more you scroll down to see results, the more articles the WI will try to import.
  2. Click the Save button
  3. Click the Web Library button to view them in you Mendeley Web Library
  4. Depending on your settings, your records will sync the next time you open Mendeley Desktop.

 

Google Scholar

To save an individual or group of references from Google Scholar to Mendeley Desktop:

  • Save desired references to My Library in Google Scholar by clicking on the star beneath each  citation 
  • When you are finished selecting records, click on My Library in the upper left corner
  • Click in the box to the left of each citation to select items to export to Mendeley
  • Click on the download arrow  at the top of the page, select BibTex and save your file
  • Import the file to Mendeley using the Files>Add Files option in Mendeley Desktop

You can also try importing records with the Web Importer

  • Select references for import from your Google result list or Google's My Library. 
  • Click the Save button
  • Click the Web Library button to view them in you Mendeley Web Library
  • Sync in Mendeley Desktop to view these records in your Mendeley Desktop library

PubMed

To save references from PubMed to Mendeley Desktop:

  • Mark the record(s) using the checkboxes to the left of the article(s) 
  • When you've finished selecting references you want to export, click the Send To button, followed by the  Citation Manager link 
  • Select Create File and Save File and save your records on your computer
  • Import the saved file to Mendeley using the Files>Add Files option in Mendeley Desktop

Ebsco Platform

Ebsco is a database platform that includes PsycInfo, ERIC and CINAHL

To import records from an Ebsco database into Mendeley Desktop:

  1. Click on the folder beside each desired reference to add it to your temporary records folder.
  2. Click the main folder at the top of the page to open the temporary records folder.
  3. Select the references to export
  4. Click the Export button on the right side of the page.
  5. Select Direct Export in RIS Format. Click the Save button on the left-side of the Ebsco page
  6. Select Open with Mendeley to add these references to your Mendeley Library..
