Data Repositories

Research data is increasingly critical for research and teaching, but the growing number of places to find data worldwide leaves many faculty and staff wondering where to begin to locate reusable research data. Trends from federal funding agencies to develop and implement data management plans pose additional challenges to those creating research data output and wishing to make them available to others. Huge amount of data available can be extremely useful and using appropriately relevant data in research and teaching endeavors will play a crucial role in scholarly communication.

Specific Repositories:

Alternative Fuels and Advanced Vehicles Data Center (AFDC)
The Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) is a comprehensive clearinghouse of information about advanced transportation technologies. The AFDC offers transportation decision makers unbiased information, data, and tools related to the deployment of alternative fuels and advanced vehicles.

Materials Genome Initiative
The Materials Genome Initiative* is a multi-agency initiative designed to create a new era of policy, resources, and infrastructure that support U.S. institutions in the effort to discover, manufacture, and deploy advanced materials twice as fast, at a fraction of the cost. Advanced materials are essential to economic security and human well being, with applications in industries aimed at addressing challenges in clean energy, national security, and human welfare, yet it can take 20 or more years to move a material after initial discovery to the market. Accelerating the pace of discovery and deployment of advanced material systems will therefore be crucial to achieving global competitiveness in the 21st century.

and other NIST Projects supporting Materials Genome Initiative.

Nanomaterial Registry
The Nanomaterial Registry is a publicly available repository for curated research data on nanomaterials, including their physico-chemical characteristics and their interactions with biological and environmental systems.

Nanotechnology Images
A large number of absolutely amazing image from the fields of nanoscience and nanotechnology.

NASA's Data Portal
In pursuit of its exploration mission, NASA has generated, collected and compiled vast amounts of digitized data that has helped us better understand Earth, other planets in our solar system, and the depths of space through the eyes of satellites, telescopes, robots, and through the cameras of astronauts. With each passing decade, advances in technology made images clearer, the information coming back from space richer, and the world smaller.

NIH Cancer Imaging Program - Nanodelivery Systems and Devices Branch
Nanotechnology is being applied across the continuum of cancer research from devices for monitoring, detection, and cancer imaging to multifunctional nanotherapeutics and post-therapy monitoring tools. Images, submitted by Alliance members, provide a compelling visual of nanotechnology at work.

NOMAD Repository
NOMAD creates, collects, stores, and cleanses computational materials science data, computed by the most important materials-science codes available today.

OpenEI
Linked energy information on hundreds of topics crowdsourced from industry and government agencies.

ThermoML Representation of Published Experimental Data
This page contains links to ThermoML files, which represent experimental thermophysical and thermochemical property data reported in the corresponding articles published by major journals in the field. These files are posted here through cooperation between the Thermodynamics Research Center (TRC) at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the journal publishers.

UIUC Airfoil Data
The UIUC Airfoil Data Site is a collection of airfoil coordinates and airfoil related links. The UIUC Airfoil Coordinates Database includes the airfoils, and they cover a wide range of applications from low Reynolds number airfoils for UAVs and model aircraft to jet transports and wind turbines.

U.S. Energy and Information data
The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) collects, analyzes, and disseminates independent and impartial energy information to promote sound policymaking, efficient markets, and public understanding of energy and its interaction with the economy and the environment.

U.S. EIA Data Tools, Apps and Images
Tools to customize searches, view specific data sets, study detailed documentation, and access time-series data.
