National Establishment Time Series (NETS) Data

National Establishment Time Series datasets include information on more than 58 million U.S. business establishments for the years 1990-2014. The data is compiled by Walls & Associates in collaboration with Dun & Bradstreet, using annual snapshots from Duns Marketing Information files. The longitudinal datasets provide an unprecedented opportunity to characterize changing neighborhood and business environments.  Our license to use this data expires December 30, 2020.

Examples of variables: business name, address and contact information, headquarters linkages, years active, industry classifications (SIC), type of establishment, employment at location and job growth, estimate annual sales, D&B credit ratings, etc.

NETS Business Level with UHCID

Re-geocoded NETS data re-categorized by the RECVD study team. Definitions of categories from the domains of Food Environments, Health Care Delivery, Physical Activity, Social and Walking Destinations can be found on our website. To create these categories, NETS data checks were supplemented with licensed chain name lists from TDLinx and publicly available data from Restaurants & Institutions

NETS Aggregation with Census Tracts and Zip Code Tabulation Areas

The RECVD study team of the Urban Health Collaborative have enhanced the NETS dataset by incorporating Census Tract and ZCTA (Zip Code Tabulation Area) mapping, recategorization of business/industry classifications, Nielsen/TDLinx marketing data, and CrimeRisk data (from ESRI). While each year from 1990-2014 is available for retail, available years vary for other sources.

Census Tract (using 2010 boundaries) and ZCTA aggregations of NETS data throughout the contiguous US, with public transit and CrimeRisk data (from ESRI).
